Question 2 How did your students react to the moment of silence?
================================================
I did not have class during the moment of silence
not in a class
Some students were unsure about what the moment of silence was for.
it was observed properly- no issues- the key is leadership from the instructor
They were respectful mostly, but a couple complained about "why are we having a moment of silence when we weren't even alive and didn't know anyone there."
I did not have students during that period
They just sat there with little emotion.
I told my special ed students it was going to take place and when it started we paused our morning meeting (which a change in schedule or routine might normally upset some of my students), but my students were incredibly receptive and respectful - I believe they sensed both the seriousness and genuineness displayed by me and the other adults in the room.
I don't think the students around me really felt the power of the moment of silence. They were not even born, so the strong emotions that the adults experience is lost on the students. I was asked many times today "are you going to make us read about 9/11 too?" The students felt bored and irritated with learning about this important event in our history. I don't know if they feel this way because they, like me, are so far removed from the pain or if their apathy is a result of disinterest.
with respect but not real understanding
My students were respectful. After the moment of silence they had questions. We watched a video of some of CBS news coverage that was live as the day unfolded.
Main office was silent
They were utterly speechless and really seemed to be reflecting on the moment
